Colleges dropping SAT as requirement for admission

Recent validity studies have shown that scores on standardized tests, including the SAT and ACT, are no better at predicting success in college than high school grades and achievement tests in individual subjects.

Holy Cross and Worcester Polytechnic Institute are among 23 accredited four-year colleges and universities in Massachusetts and more than 800 nationwide that have dropped ACT and SAT requirements. Assumption College in Worcester has dropped the test requirement beginning with students applying now for the fall of 2010. The national trend to de-emphasize admissions scores is likely to continue accelerating.

Critics of the SAT say that transcript are a much better way to represent academic success in high school to the admissions committee.
